How do you make a Zip Gun in Prison?

I've heard stuff about people having zip guns in prison and have done it before for projects, but i was wondering how do they or what do they use to make the bullets? I was watching season 2 of My Name is Earl and some guy melted bed springs for a bullet, not sure how it fires though.
