How much control do screen writers have over their scripts?

I wanted to be an author, but I've realized that I'm really heavy on dialogue and low on thoughts. So I'm considering screenwriting. But I was wondering how much control a screenwriter has over their script. Like will it be the same when made into the movie or will it be changed into something almost completely unreconizable? Because I devolp my characters well and even minor changes would be big.
