How do most screenwriters get their foot in the door, and how do they make $ when they are first starting out?

A guest speaker from my school told us that most screenwriters get to the top through "connections". As for money, she said she started off with odd jobs on the set. Co-screenwriter (or something of the sort), costume designer, extras on movie sets, etc...
